Leo Tindemans, the Belgian statesman born on 16 April 1922, served as prime minister of Belgium between 1974 and 1979. In 1961 he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies.
On 10 October 1979, Tindemans submitted the resignation of his government after a dispute with members of his coalition on restructuring Belgium into a federal state that could allow separate assemblies for its different linguistic regions.
